Will Truth Set You Free

"So Jesus said to those Jews who had believed Him, 'if you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."
(John 8:31-32)

All of our lives we've heard the term "The truth will set you free", usually used in this way, "Tell the truth and the truth will set you free". I use to hear that when I was young …you know, when you had done something wrong and someone was wanting you to fess up, they would always us that, trying to get you to believe that if you told the truth, everything would be better. But, it usually got me a spanking.

Though telling the truth always is the best bet…this term "the truth will set you free", doesn't have anything to do with us or anyone else being truthful. It actually comes from John 8, "So Jesus said to those Jews who had believed Him, 'if you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." (John 8:31-32) The truth or Truth is Jesus. Jesus said "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life…" Jesus is the Truth that He was referring to in John 8, and He, and only He can truly set you free.

If you live in America you know national freedom, If you've accomplished Dave Ramsey's classes, you know financial freedom, if you're older and find it hard to get around, but now have a "Hover Round" then you know mobility freedom, If you've been in jail and now are out, you know personal freedom, etc… But the freedom that Jesus brings is much different. The freedom Jesus gives is from the Law. It's the freedom that we don't have to be good enough to obtain salvation, and that's a good thing, since we can't be good enough. I've tried, you've tried…it doesn't work. No matter what we try to do we just can't be perfect. That's why Jesus became the perfect sacrifice for our sins, the truth we need to set us truly free. When you are set free from sin, the Law and the worry of your eternal destination…then and only then…will you know Truth and be truly free. "…and you will know the Truth and the Truth will set you free". Come to know the truth today!!
